#1) Meta Keywords Can Boost Your Site’s Ranking
Some webmasters believe adding meta keywords to their site encourages higher search rankings for the respective keywords. Joost de Valk, developer of the popular Yoast SEO Plugin, explains that meta keywords offer no SEO benefit. In 2009, for instance, Google confirmed that its ranking algorithm does not look at a site’s meta keywords.
#2) You Have to Submit Your Site to Google
Google’s Search Console offers a convenient form in which webmasters can submit website URLs to the search engine. However, the Mountain View company will likely find your site regardless of whether you use this tool. As long as there are links pointing to your site, Google and other search engines will find it.
#3) A First Place Ranking Is All That Matters
While websites ranking in the first place generally receive the most organic traffic, lower rankings can also yield traffic and conversions. One study, for example, found that websites in the second place receive 17.6 percent traffic share. In comparison, websites in the 10th place receive 2.5 percent traffic share.
#4) The More Backlinks You Build, The Better
The number of backlinks pointing to your site will affect its search rankings. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that building more backlinks will encourage higher search rankings. On the contrary, an excessive number of low-quality, irrelevant backlinks may lower your site’s search rankings. When building backlinks, focus on fewer, higher-quality backlinks.
#5) PPC Advertising Can Improve Your Site’s Search Ranking
Whether it’s Google AdWords or Bing Ads, advertising your website on pay-per-click (PPC) networks isn’t going to increase its search rankings. Search engines ignore links created through PPC networks.
#6) Link Exchanges
Exchanging links with another website, also known as reciprocal linking, was once a popular SEO strategy used by webmasters. However, it now offers little to no SEO benefit. If you exchange links with another website, the SEO value is essentially cancelled out. Therefore, you should focus on one-way links when optimizing your site.
