Powering more than a quarter of the internet, WordPress is the most popular content management system (CMS). While it’s naturally designed with clean, search engine friendly code, webmasters can encourage even higher search rankings by following some simple steps.
#1) Use Self-Hosted WordPress
There are two different versions of WordPress: self-hosted and hosted. With the self-hosted version, you’ll have more control and freedom over your site, making it the recommended choice for webmasters. The hosted version, on the other hand, comes with limitations that may restrict your ability to climb the search rankings.
#2) Install an SEO Plugin
One of the first things you should do after installing WordPress on your domain is install an SEO plugin. Developed by WordPress savant Joost de Valk, the Yoast SEO plugin performs a variety of optimization functions, including sitemap creation, speed optimization, keyword focus, image optimization and more.
#3) Use ‘Post Name’ Permalinks
As explained by Search Engine Journal, the default WordPress settings use plain permalinks for newly created posts and pages. You can change them to make them more Google friendly, however, by accessing Settings > Permalinks under your site’s admin dashboard.
#4) Use a Responsive Theme
WordPress supports the use of interchangeable templates known as themes. To encourage higher search rankings, you should install a responsive theme. Like responsive websites, responsive themes are designed to automatically adjust according to the device on which they are viewed. When someone visits your WordPress site on a desktop computer, for instance, they’ll see a desktop-optimized layout. When someone visits on a mobile device, however, they’ll see a mobile-optimized layout.
#5) Give Each Page a Unique, Relevant Title Tag
Each page of your WordPress site should have a unique and relevant title tag. According to Moz, title tags are used as headlines in search engine listings, web browsers and social media networks. Therefore, they play an important role in search engine optimization (SEO).
#6) Publish Content, Lots of Content
You won’t achieve a top search ranking for your WordPress site unless it offers something of value to users. By publishing high-quality content, though, your site will be more appealing to human visitors and search engines alike.
Following these tips will help you achieve a higher search ranking and more organic traffic.
