Affiliate Marketing: How to Choose a Product to Promote

One of the most important steps in launching a successful affiliate marketing campaign is choosing a product to promote. From shirts and smartphones to car parts and furniture, there are countless products from which to choose. Rather than promoting the first affiliate product you come across, though, you should follow these tips to maximize your return on investment (ROI).

The Network

Most affiliate products are offered through a third-party company known as an affiliate network. Clickbank, for instance, is a popular affiliate network that specializes in digital products and services while CJ offers a broad range of physical products. Choose a network that’s reputable and well known in the affiliate marketing industry.

The Pay

Of course, you should also consider how much the product pays. According to a study conducted by Jupiter Research, networks and vendors paid affiliates $2.1 billion in 2008. The amount for which an affiliate is paid for his or her work, however, varies. Some products compensate affiliates a fixed dollar amount for each sale they drive whereas others compensate affiliates with a percentage of the sales they drive.

Supported Methods of Promotion

When choosing an affiliate product, check to see what methods of promotion are allowed. Certain traffic channels may be prohibited with some products. A product may prohibit affiliates from using popups or email, for instance. And if you’re caught violating these rules, the network may close your account.

Popularity

If a product isn’t popular, you may struggle to sell it. Successful affiliate marketers know the importance of choosing products with high demand. They often use keyword research tools to measure the demand for a product. If a product receives only a handful of search queries every month, it’s best to choose a different, more popular product to promote.

Competition

Finally, choose a product that’s not too competitive. If you’re trying to promote the same product has 100 other affiliates and businesses, you’ll have a hard time turning a profit. Some competition is completely normal, but you should avoid products with excessive affiliate competition.

By following these tips, you’ll have an easier time choosing profitable affiliate products to promote.
