If you work a low-paying job, you might feel that there’s no escape from the endless cycle of bills, mounting debt and stress. For Dato Vijay Eswaran, it has become clear that there is no limit to what one person can accomplish.
Once a low-income London taxi driver, Vijay is now a successful network marketer and world-renowned economist, philanthropist and best-selling author. Citing Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, as one of his inspirations, Vijay has the mindset that a college education is helpful but not necessarily a requirement for success. Instead, he believes that it takes innovation, excellent professional role models and a strong drive to follow through with plans to find success in the business world.
A Long Journey and Exciting History
Vijay Eswaran grew up in Malaysia, where he often moved from town to town due to his father’s job. The difficulties that come with always being uprooted and moved to a new location taught him many lessons about how to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world. His history provided strength during his college years, where he studied economics at the University of London and did a variety of menial jobs to make ends meet. It was during this period that he was recruited into a multi-level marketing program and began learning about network marketing.
He then moved to the United States, where he attended graduate school at the University of Illinois and studied management information systems, also known as internet technology. He lost interest in network marketing during this time. When his mentor at the University of Illinois got him back into it, he ended up making more money than ever before. However, doubts about whether his father would approve of such work prevented him from fully embracing the opportunities.
He moved back to Asia, got married and took a job with a major corporation. It wasn’t until the company was sold out from under him and he realized the instability of working for others that he began to truly contemplate the possibilities of network marketing. In August of 1998, after a few run ins with various network marketing companies, Eswaran, his wife and their team started their own company.

Network marketing is essentially about human beings, as Vijay Eswaran says. To be successful, you will need to understand how different people operate. Someone from a small town in India is not going to have the same mentality as a person from a large city in America. Understanding the goals and desires of different markets is key for succeeding in network marketing.

Globalization is the future, and with something like network marketing, it’s a requirement for major success. Whether we like it or not, global communication is here, and that means network marketers will have to go above and beyond to take their businesses to the top. There are more people to compete with now, but there is also more opportunity than ever before.
3. Take on a New Mentality
With the rise of globalization also comes other changes. The world is moving away from being a labor-based economy, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to count on a job being available for them. Success in the future will likely require innovation and the guts to work for oneself.

Network marketing allows people to work from home, gaining income while still raising families and maintaining households. It allows people to develop something solid and sustainable in a world where economists expect over four billion people to be seeking employment within a decade.
