If you run an online business, then you are all too familiar with website traffic. You also know how hard it is to have a constant flow of traffic to your website every month. If on the other hand, you are new to online business and you have just heard about it; it is the number of visitors who visit your website. It is important because search engines use it to rank your website.

Why is it important?

In the early days when e-commerce was just starting to gain roots, web traffic was the single important metric through which to measure a websites website. Although other metrics have come up over the years, web traffic remains relevant and important. It goes without saying that the more visitors you receive, the higher the conversion rate and vice versa. So high web traffic translates to more customers, more sales, and more revenue. However, today’s analysts don’t just look at how many visitors a website receives they also look at how they arrived, how long they stayed, how many converted to buying customers and so on.

Types of website traffic

Search engines divide the traffic you receive into four categories namely; direct traffic, campaign traffic, referral traffic and campaign traffic. Search engine algorithms are intelligent enough to distinguish how a visitor arrived at your website. You need to learn how to balance your traffic if you are to get the best of search engines. It is advisable to get 20% direct, 30% referral, 40% search traffic and 10% campaign traffic. You, therefore, need to balance your SEO efforts to achieve that balance.

How to grow your web traffic

There are numerous ways through which you can grow your web traffic. You can buy but remain on the search engines regulations, or you can grow them organically which is more recommended. Almost all search engines love organically grown traffic as opposed to bought traffic. The organically grown traffic will often lead to a high ranking. To do that, you need to religiously create content for your website and not just any content. Original and relevant content will give you a longer shelf life. You can also use social media to grow your web traffic. It is important to note that there are over 2.5 billion users on social media. Share your web content to your social media accounts, and you will receive high traffic. Do not get too greedy and think of cheating the search engines, they are sensitive to cheaters and the punishment is severe.
